Review Azumanga Daioh

With the convention season coming along it is the time of year that anime companies license new stuff. After hearing that ADV licensed Azumanga Daioh. Upon hearing that I decided to make a review posthaste before I cleaned out my hard drive.

Azumanga Daioh is the story of six high school girls simply going about their normal high school lives. Yes that is it. No giant robots, no magical princesses, no cyborg warriors in spandex. Are you still with us? Given this fact Azumanga Daioh is a wonderful and sometimes bitter sweet comedy about life.

It is hard to talk about the plot to Azumanga Daioh for there practically is none. The show and the comedy are entirely character driven. Good thing for the show is that the characters themselves are very endearing. For example there is Chiyo, who despite being only ten years old is smart enough to get into high school. Chiyo is very cute but her cuteness is never forced onto the viewer. Then there is Ayumu who is nicknamed Osaka because that is where she is from. Osaka is a rather spaced out character who comes up with interesting yet odd observations.

The animation quality for Azumanga Daioh is decent. Due to the fact it is a comedy the show doesn't rely on big effects or anything of that sort. Still the animation is good and you will never complain about it.

Azumanga Daioh is a great comedy. It is not an epic story or anything truly deep, just some funny people in funny situations. Every so often you need a series like this to lighten your life up. Let us just hope that ADV doesn't take forever in releasing this series. However when it is released Azumanga Daioh will be the next comedy hit in the American Anime community. I give Azumanga Daioh a rating of very good/ excellent.
