When you watch a lot of anime there are certain clichés that get old fast. So watching Kashimashi I found a breath of fresh air to watch a show about homosexual characters who have a semblance of sanity instead of the usual psychos animators parade about.

Hazumu is a young man in love with a girl Yasuna. He also has a childhood friend named Tomari who secretly loves him but can’t admit it. He confesses to her but she rejects him. Dejected he retreats to the hill where he first met her and contemplates. Out of nowhere a UFO hits Hazumu. The aliens do there best to reconstruct his body but make one huge error, Hazumu is now a girl. If that wasn’t weird enough Yasuna starts taking a newfound interest in Hazumu.

For a shonen (targeted at a male audience) yuri (lesbian) story Kashimashi is a remarkably mature and detailed romantic story. While there is some fan service present it doesn’t take over the story the way it does in some shows. Although there are some things that may look a bit contrived, particularly Hazumu’s transformation and Yasuna’s condition, but these are partially plot devices and partiality devices to explain lesbian and but the characters themselves are always treated with the seriousness and attention they deserve. If the topic of the show sounds at all interesting to you then Kashimashi is well worth watching.
