Anime Review: Bubble Gum Crisis 2040
Review Bubble Gum Crisis 2040Written by WarpshadowRating good/ very good
Remakes always have a problem with them since any changes are viewed negatively even if there are improvements in other areas. The Bubble Gum Crisis television show is such a remake easily as good at the original.
In the year 2040 Tokyo is a metropolis that is powered by the labor of a type of robot called Boomers. Sometimes these Boomers go rogue and the government response (the AD Police) is not up to the task. That is where the mysterious vigilantes known as the Knight Sabers step in. While officially the Knight Sabers are just an Internet rumor newcomer Lina Yamazaki is determined to find out the truth. On her first day of work she has a run in with a woman on a motorcycle that ironically may lead her to exactly what she was looking for.
Bubble Gum Crisis 2040 is a remake of an oav made in the eighties, however this review won't concentrate on comparisons as both works are ultimately separate works with their own strengths and weaknesses. First and foremost of those strengths is how ell the characters work together. As a result the show in the beginning has little in the way of continuity since time is being spent developing those connections. This changes in the second half of the show as gears switch to a more story centric mode. The character designs and animation is typical of the late nineties when computer animation was just starting to take over making the show a bit clunky in spots but still very serviceable. Overall Bubble Gum Crisis 2040 might not be a classic but it will be good entertainment to anybody who isn't too attached to the Oav.
