This show has often been called Slayers in space. While the name may be slightly correct don’t go into it expecting something equal to the best parts of the Slayers franchise.

The distant future is a time in need of heroes since the universal guardians don’t have enough in their budget to hire the men to right the galaxy’s wrongs. Enter Kain Blueriver, a troubleshooter looking to save the day hopefully with his psyblade and always while wearing a cape. He also has an ace up his sleeve in the form of the lost ship sword breaker. One day Kain and Canal (Swordbreaker’s computer) infiltrated a crime syndicate because of a job they ran across Milly, a woman determined to be the best detective (or something else cool) in the universe. While neither one knew it at the moment the meeting is the birth of an invincible team.

Lost Universe is an action slash comedy set inside of a soft science fiction setting by that I mean that there are spaceship and light saber knockoffs but the show is engineered to steer towards what looks like a cool fight rather than consistency. The show for at least the first half or so is generally episodic with bigger bad guys that can’t be knocked over in one episode appearing in the second half. I found the show to be rather bland with characters that feel a bit two dimensional and a plot that feels rudimentary. It’s not bad enough to say that it’s awful but certainly Lost Universe is not on my recommendation list.
